Neutraface Slab

neutraface_slab.jpg

I’ve always been a fan on the wonderful Neutrface typeface. It’s simple, clean and classical and the geometry gives it a balanced feel that is pleasing. It’s damn sexy, especially in the light weights.

So when I saw that House Industries released a Slab version, I was all giddy. I’ve recently been obsessed with Slab and Serif faces so this was instance love.

Neutraface Slab comes in five display weights and four text weights, including italics, as well as small caps and seven figure styles. The complete set will cost you $599.00, which isn’t so bad considering the amount of the weights you get. I might have to add this to my collection.

Hello: A Limited Edition Buddy Carr Skateboard

bc_skate.jpg

I’m finally back up! Sorry for the downtime folks and thanks for being so patient. Now that the site is working again, I can finally post about a new project I’ve been working on.

For the past few months I’ve been working with Buddy Carr Skateboards on a limited edition skateboard. Buddy contacted me about doing a complete that exhibited a design not really found in the skate industry. He also wanted it to be a prime example of a well functioning skateboard. Form follows function is the idea behind this project.

Buddy commissioned me to not only design the deck and wheel graphics, but also the shape of the board itself. I grew up skating in the 80’s so the classic shapes are what I find more interesting, which led me to the “stinger” type design for the board. Along with the ultra turning geometry trucks and the soft wheels, this is going to be a great cruiser. I haven’t ridden it yet but according to Buddy, it’s an awesome ride.

For the graphics, Buddy and I agreed that something minimal and typographic would be interesting and unique. I’ve always been intrigued with the idea of saying “Hello” in different languages and this was also a nice way of introducing the collaboration to not only the skate world, but to the design world as well. It’s all designed on a very simple grid and set in the lovely Avant Garde.

The wheels and deck we’re just finished and the grip is in production right now. The complete should be available next month, once I get the site and everything else in place. Only 100 are being made and will be priced a little more than your average skateboard.

Keep checking back, I’ll make an announcement once it’s available. In the meantime you can see some more pics here.

Astrid Stavro Studio

I’m absolutely in love with this poster by Barcelona based studio, Astrid Stavro, that was created for the International Piano Competition in 2007. Strong, beautiful typography on a well formed, grid reminiscent of the great work that came out of the 60’s. A wonderful example of the International Typographic Style.

They’ve designed a ton of wonderful pieces so be sure you surf through their portfolio. Unfortunately the site isn’t that great, and it’s a little annoying to do so, but it’s very much worth it.

Astrid Stavro is also responsible for the wonderful Art of the Grid site.

Typographic Card Game

Brazilian design studio ps.2 created this wonderful self-promotion typographic memory card game.

The set includes of 20 pairs of cards, each one presenting a different type family, as well as a typographical glossary. It also contains a text about the evolution of type design, locating in history each typeface used in the cards.

Set in Univers Condensed and printed on Condat Silk + Matte paper.

New Deal Typeface by Neville Brody

new_deal.jpg

Neville Brody and his team at Research Studios have designed a new typeface named “New Deal” for the upcoming Michael Mann film “Public Enemies”, starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.

The typeface is inspired by the 1930’s era typography but with a modern edge and is being used for the one-sheet and film trailer.

It has a very nice industrial feel to it, almost along the lines of Soviet style typography.
