Hans G. Conrad: HfG Ulm

Hans conrad hfg ulm

AisleOne reader, René, was kind enough to write in to share his collection of photos taken by Hans G. Conrad, the first student at the Ulm School of Design / Hochschule für Gestaltung HfG Ulm. Conrad passed away several years ago, but before he did he gave René over 12,000 photos. About two years ago René began to upload the images to Flickr. A lot of really great photos already up there, like the one pictured here of Otl Aicher teaching a typography class. You’ll find a lot of other great design legends in the photos like Bayer, Eames and Bill.

What a great way of remembering such a historic school and influential designers.

G-Star RAW for Vitra

G star raw vitra

I’m really diggin’ this special edition furniture collection of nine classics by Jean Prouvé, remixed by G-Star RAW for Vitra. I’m a fan of G-Star clothing and I’m fascinated by how the furniture feels right in line with the G-Star brand. This is a great collab.

The collection is going to be available for one year at The Conran Shop starting in October.

Jakob Jensen

Jakob jensen

I can’t believe I’ve never known of Jakob Jensen or his work before reading about him on ISO50. Part of me feels out of it, but I also love moments of discovery like this. Seeing and falling in love with design that feels so new and fresh, but that’s been around long before I was born. There’s something comforting about that.

Anyway, Danish born Jakob Jensen is an industrial designer who worked for Bang & Olufsen, where he was a designer from 1965-1991. His minimal approach was clearly consistent with Dieter Rams. That microphone is pure perfection.

MoMA has a nice gallery of some of his work.

Nooka Zub Zayu Watch

The Zub Zayu is the latest release from lifestyle brand, Nooka. Taken from the Japanese word, sayu, meaning left and right, The Zayu is an ambidextrous design that wears well on both left and right wrists. Like all Nooka products, this watch exhibits a simple, minimal, but unique design.

You can pre-order the watch.

Writer iPad App

Yesterday, the talented Oliver Reichenstein, and his crew at Information Architects, released Writer for the iPad. The app is a well-designed, stripped down writing tool that allows you to focus on your writing instead of distractions. There’s a Focus Mode that removes auto-correction, spell-checker, toolbars, scrolling, editing, cut/copy/paste and fades out all the text except for the three lines you’re working on. The mode is really great for when you’re stuck on a sentence and need to concentrate on that small section of text.

Much attention has also been paid to the typography. Writer doesn’t have any fancy formatting settings. Instead, font type, text size, column width, leading and contrast have all been optimized to provide the best reading experience in both portrait and landscape modes. The app makes use of Nitti Light, a monospaced typeface by Bold Monday.

I’ve had the privilege of beta testing the app before it’s was released, and I can easily say that Writer is one of my favorite apps on my iPad. I’ve used it many times to write blog posts, emails and even portions of my book. I’m easily distracted when I write and this app helps me to focus. Oliver and crew paid a great deal of attention to the details, and it shows. I applaud them for the excellent work.

Oliver posted an article detailing their thinking behind the app.
