Minimalissimo Nº1

Have you heard of the site Minimalissimo? If not, go check it out. It’s an excellent online magazine for minimal design. They now have a printed magazine, and Issue Nº1 is available. The printed edition highlights the best features from the website, as well as exploring the minimalist design ethos and its influence on creativity.

More about the issue:

We have outlined five wide ranging disciplines—architecture, art, fashion, graphic & package design, and industrial design—to showcase what we feel is outstanding minimalism. We gain fascinating insights into the working lives of some of the most renowned artists, architects and designers of today. We interview Danish multidisciplinary studio Norm Architects, Swiss artist Zimoun, unisex fashion designer Rad Hourani, and Vitsœ managing director Mark Adams, who worked alongside the great Dieter Rams for more than twenty years.

The magazine consists of 160 pages on 120gsm uncoated paper, with a 300gsm soft-touch laminate uncoated cover.

2012 MTA New York City Subway Diagram

SuperWarmRed Designs, founded by former Vignelli Associates Beatriz Cifuentes and Yoshiki Waterhouse, is offering limited-edition signed and unsigned 36” x 45” posters of the MTA New York City Subway Diagram, designed in 2012 by Massimo Vignelli, Beatriz, and Yoshiki for the MTA’s Weekender website and app.

The 2012 version is based on Vignelli’s iconic 1972 subway map, but it’s been updated based on satellite data, and improved for better legibility. The poster is printed in Pantone and Hexachrome inks on acid-free archival cover-weight paper.

SuperWarmRed Designs will also be releasing a series of six posters designed by Vignelli Associates, that feature tight crops of the New York City Subway Diagram. The set will be printed in Pantone inks on acid-free archival cover-weight paper and will be sold as a set. Look for this series soon.

I really love the detail series. Hoping the set will be reasonably priced.

Manuals 2

After the success of Manuals 1, Unit Editions has just announced Manuals 2, which features graphic standards and corporate identity manuals for IBM, Westinghouse, Canadian Rail, Bell, Knoll, PTT, Montreal Olympics, Dutch Police and more. These manuals were designed by some of the masters: Georges Huel, Paul Rand, Allan Fleming, Total Design, Massimo and Lella Vignelli, Alan Fletcher, Otl Aicher and more.

Manuals 2 will also feature my copy of the graphics manual for the 1976 Montréal Olympics. Pretty excited that a piece of my collection is included.

The book includes essays, interviews and a forward by Lance Wyman, designer of the 1968 Mexico Olympic games.
