Design Museum x State of the Obvious

Mash Creative and Design Museum have joined forces to develop a collection of products under the State of the Obvious S/O/T/O brand. The collection is exclusivity available at Design Museum and includes an iPhone 3 & 4 and iPad 1 & 2 GelaSkins, Staedtler Marker Pens, USB Sticks, Travel Card Wallets and Keyrings.

Creative Director, Mark Bloom explains:

Extending the philosophy & thinking behind our branded State of the Obvious collection, we have designed a set of products exclusively for the Design Museum.

The design of these products has been heavily influenced by the International Typographic Style from the 50’s and 60’s & shows an evolution from our original S/O/T/O collection. It has been designed to appeal to typography and design lovers alike.

At S/O/T/O we design and produce products which not only look good but also have a useful function.

The Launch of Vetted

Vetted

This new is about a week old, but I wanted to mention it to all of you because it’s something I’m personally proud of.

About a week ago, I launched a new venture. A lifestyle store called Vetted. Essentially, it’s a collection of goods that can compliment a modern way of life. From stationery to clothing, we look for unique goods that are exceptionally crafted and functional. We also offer a variety of independent magazines that you don’t find often at your local newsstand.

For the branding, which is actually still in development, I wanted to keep it extremely simple and stripped down. The triangle in the logo has two meanings: it represents a funnel, emphasizing the curation process we take, and it also a representation of a V. For the type treatment I went with Futura because it had the lines and the attitude that I was after. I did slight modifications to the E and D to make it feel more balanced with the triangle.

The simple, stripped-down aesthetic is carried into the site, and eventually will extended to other identity pieces.

All in all, it’s been a great experience so far and I’m excited to see where I’m going to take the brand.

As a small thank you to all of you loyal readers, I’ve setup a 15% discount code that you can use if you’d like. Just enter SHOPIFY70URPTIW at checkout.

Hugo & Cat – The BLK Book

hugo-cat-blk-book.jpg

Uk agency Hugo & Cat initially designed and produced the BLK Book as a Christmas gift for their clients. I’m lucky enough to have an early copy and it’s a superbly crafted book that just makes you want to crack it open and take a big whiff of the glue, ink and paper. It’s pieces like this that make me love the printed medium.

The book is hand finished in heavy ebony Colorplan paper, printed with gold and white foil by Generation Press.

The BLK Book will soon be available for purchase.

Buddy Carr 66 Signature Model

buddy-carr-skateboards-66.jpg

The “66” is the latest skateboard I designed for Buddy Carr Skateboards. It’s Buddy’s signature model, so he’ll be ripping it up on one at the pools across SoCal.

Lately, Buddy and I have been inspired by GP racing graphics from the 60s and 70s. I’ve always loved the light blue and orange color scheme of the Ford GT40 Gulf Oil, so I used that as inspiration for this board. The design morphed into the final angled version after a few rounds of ideas that played off the simple classic racing graphics. The text is set in Univers Ultra Condensed, which really compliments the design.

As always, it was a blast designing this. You can check out more photos and info or buy a complete at Buddy Carr Skateboards.

Mash Creative 2011 Limited Edition Calendar

mash-creative-2011-limited-edition-calendar.jpg

Mash Creative have released a 2011 version of their beautiful limited edition ‘minutes’ calendar, a successor to last years successful 2010 ‘seconds’ calendar. This one has been printed with glow in the dark ink so you can enjoy it at any time of day.

When I posted about last years version, it stirred up a small debate about the design and function of the calendar, so here’s an excerpt from Mash on their thought process:

The human race seems to be obsessed with time, it’s the one thing we never seem to have enough of. The year ‘Twenty Eleven’ (2011) is made up of five hundred and twenty five thousand, six hundred minutes, that’s an average of around fourty three thousand, eight hundred minutes a month. Our calendar has been designed to be a typographic representation of the year, each month has been broken down into minutes which have been listed below each month name. The jumbled title text at the top of the poster continues the theme from last years calendar and has been influenced by old analogue flip clocks. The calendar has been printed with glow in the dark ink allowing the design to take on a completely different look at night. Using the idea of sidereal time (star time) the highlighted months glow like a constellation of stars.

Expertly screen printed by Bob Eight Pop – each poster has been printed in white and glow in the dark ink and printed onto high quality 160gsm Raven Black Kaskad. Each poster is hand numbered and signed by the designer.

You can grab one of these beauties from Counter Objects.
