Happy Holidays

So, another year has passed. I want to thank you all for making this site what it is today. I also want to wish you and your families a healthy and happy holidays.

I’m going to take the next few days off, but I’ll be back next week with more design goodness. In the meantime, I leave you with this sneak peak of the latest Buddy Carr skateboard that I had the pleasure of designing. More to come in the next few weeks. Stay tuned.

Scout EP Cover

I recently designed the cover of a promo EP for a New York City band called Scout. The album is titled “All Those Relays” and after speaking with the band I was inspired to use circuit schematic symbols in the design. I find the schematics to be visually interesting and the symbols have a certain beauty to them. I’ve always seen different letters in the symbols, so I had the idea of forming the album name using the symbols in a schematic.

After researching the standard symbols used in the industry, I knew that I would have to just make up some of the symbols myself. So some of them are actual symbols, some are variations on symbols and some are completely fabricated.

The toughest part was forming the letters, but not making them too obvious and at the same time remaining true to the standard symbols. Doing this and keeping a seamless circuit also proved to be difficult. I went through a few pencil sketches before settling on a path.

All in all I’m pretty happy with the results. You can check out more photos on my site.

Process Journal: Edition Three

I just received Edition Three of the excellent design publication Process Journal. It features work from Bibliotheque, Studio Newwork, Andrew Zuckerman, MadeThought, North, Stockholm Design Lab, Büro North and more. As well as articles by Tom Crabtree (Manual) and Warren Taylor (The Narrows).

This journal is exquisite. The quality of the production and design is superb and the publication is an example of why print should never die. The cover alone is to die for: Two color cover with debossing and printed on Knight Cream 350GSM Cover stock.

Edits by Edit

Edits for Edit is a project that features very limited edition posters by select designers that were asked to pick a genre of music, and create a design using only one element and one typeface. The A1 posters are screen printed on French Paper Pop Tone and for sale on the site.

The New Wave poster featured here is by my good friend Duane King.
