Gerald Cinamon is an American designer and typographer who was the chief designer at Penguin and studied under Paul Rand and Armin Hofmann. He’s also credited with bringing the Swiss Style to the UK.

In honor of his work, SEA has produced a book of his work and two screen prints. There will also be an exhibition from Sept. 4 – Oct. 6 at the Institute of Contemporary Art.

More info on Cinamon here.

I’ve never seen Cinamon’s work until now, and it’s impressive.

Glory Glory

Glory Glory

Sometimes I wish I lived in the UK, so that I can attend all these great design exhibitions. Glory Glory is one of them, an upcoming exhibition and book of large format typographic posters based on football (soccer) chants. Some of the contributors are Ben Bos, Wim Crouwel, Bibliothèque, Build, Craig Oldham, Experimental Jetset, Mash Creative, SEA, Spin, Dave Sedgwick, and many more.

The exhibition will take place tomorrow at:

Hoxton Arches
37 Cremer Street
London E2 8HD

All proceeds will go to British Blind Sport.

This great exhibition is curated by Nick Blakeman, Alex Brown and Craig Oldham, and sponsored by Gavin Martin Colournet and GF Smith.

I haven’t been able to find any of the posters that were designed for the event, but Dave Sedgwick sent in his awesome contribution, which is pictured above. His piece uses football studs to create the type and the chant is of the Argentinian team, Boca Juniors. It’s made of wood and acrylic, and the rest of the chant is etched into the wood around the edges.

Great designers, great design, for a good cause. Sounds like it’s going to be a fun time. If you’re in London, be sure not to miss this.

The Wishbone Chair

The Wishbone Chair was designed in 1949 by Danish designer Hans J. Wegner for furniture company Carl Hansen & Søn. The classic chair has been in production since 1950, and is always been handmade by the finest craftsman. The chair is made of 14 parts, and requires 100 separate processes, which takes around 3 weeks to complete.

What’s so impressive with Wegner’s chair designs is that they’re over 50 years old, but still look very modern. He was ahead of his time.

Design Milk got a behind-the-scenes look at how the chair is made, and they took some great photos of the process.

The video above also gives a glimpse into the quality and craftsmanship that goes into every chair. They are expensive, but worth every penny.
