Cigarettes With Style
July 31st, 2008I personally hate cigarettes but I’m in love with this minimalist packaging design for Japanese cigarette company JT Tobacco. Designed by ASYL, the packaging features a gorgeous side slide box. I always love when I see design that challenges the standard.

Objectified

Objectified is a feature-length independent documentary about industrial design. It’s a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It’s about the people who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It’s about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability. It’s about our relationship to mass-produced objects and, by extension, the people who design them.
Through vérité footage and in-depth conversations, the film documents the creative processes of some of the world’s most influential designers, and looks at how the things they make impact our lives. What can we learn about who we are, and who we want to be, from the objects with which we surround ourselves?

Objectified is currently in production and will have its world premiere in early 2009.

Setting Up A Baseline Grid

Check out this excellent write up on Typophile on how to setup a flexible baseline grid in Adobe InDesign. The author has set up the grid so that every baseline is 12pts apart. This is a good setting that gives you a few leading options to choose from, but someone commented below the article that they’ve setup a 3pt system, which in my opinion works very nicely. Having a baseline every 3 pts gives you great flexibility with leading allowing you to create typography that is more dynamic.

Nike Air Jordan IV
July 21st, 2008I pull inspiration from all sorts of things in life, not only graphic design, and one example of these inspirations is this legendary pair of sneakers, the Nike Air Jordan IV’s. Originally released in 1988, the IV’s were re-released this weekend and I picked up two pairs since no one knows when they’ll be released again, if ever.
The simple, minimal design is still perfect 20 years later, making them one of the best designed sneakers in history.
They’re pretty much sold-out but Finishline just restocked a few more sets so grabbed them before they’re gone.
