The new book Symbol by Angus Hyland of Pentagram looks like a gem.
The book features over 1300 symbols, organized into groups and sub-groups according to their visual characteristics. Each category includes a short introduction on who the symbol was designed for, the designer, and in some cases, what the symbol stands for. These sections are interspersed with short case studies on both classic and more recently designed symbols.
This is a great book. The presentation is simple but very effective. the book showcases an array of symbols, from very well known marks to some interesting lesser known ones. Symbols is a visual treat and a superb reference book.
The book itself looks great, but I really like what the treatment they’ve given the title. Very smart.
Beautiful cover and presentation. I would love to see how they arrived at this design and other ideas that were floating around.
It’s just so sexy. That’s all I can say, really. Sexy. The rhythm is dead-on.
