Erola Boix is a Spanish graphic designer with a superb portfolio that really shows off this designers talent. Pictured here is a promotional poster for DeTank, a design and art collectors site. Also check out the design for the Fundació Palau Newspaper. Perfection.

Erola has recently moved to NYC and is looking for freelance or full-time work.

    80 Magazine

    August 6th, 2009

I’m back in action folks, sorry for the short hiatus.

While I was away I came across this new blog called 80 Magazine that features classic design and typography from the 50’s and 60’s. It instantly has become one of my favorite blogs to read by featuring work by Gerstner, Brockmann, Lohse, Crouwel and Emil Ruder, who’s poster is pictured above.

The blog has a lot of pieces that I’ve never seen, including this collection of posters by Emil Ruder.

    Grid Calculator by Designers Bookshop

    April 26th, 2009

As you know, I’m a big grid system user. One of the most time consuming, and sometimes frustrating, aspects of grid systems is calculating and creating them. If you’re new to grids, I suggest you do it all by hand at first to learn the process. But once you get the hang of it, and understand it, an application can speed the process up considerably and save you valuable time.

Over the last few months I’ve been using an app called Grid Calculator, developed by Designers Bookshop, to do all my calculating for me so that I could concentrate on other things. It’s available for both Mac and PC and helps with calculating correct leading, margins, gutters, row space and “f” height for image placement. It also includes a handy conversion tool and document proportions.

It’s currently aimed more towards editorial design, but it could still be used for web design with some minor calculating on the side. Hopefully they expand the next version to include more features for web specific design.

I figured that a lot of you would be interested in this app, so I’ve contacted the company and they’ve agreed to give AisleOne readers a 10% discount. The offer is only valid this week: Monday, April 27th to Friday, May 1st. To get the discount, enter in the following code upon checkout : Baseline.

    Enjoy and happy gridding.

    Scenario

I’m always amazed at the amount of quality work coming out of Australia and New Zealand. Add another firm to the list. Scenario is a multi-diciplinary firm with office in Auckland and Wellington producing stellar work. I’ve also been informed that their site is built on a 12 column — sub-divided in 24 column grid, all aligned to a baseline grid throughout. Very nice!

    National Theatre Posters

    January 14th, 2009

The National Theatre has an excellent site dedicated to the posters created for the theatre dating back to the 1960’s. You can browse via genre or decade and the posters are available at multiple sizes for purchase. I recommend checking out the 60’s and 70’s first.

    Experimental Jetset 2008 Relaunch

    December 30th, 2008

I had to come out of hibernation for this one. Danny, Marieke and Erwin from Experimental Jetset just emailed me about their new site. They’ve added a ton of new work, most of which I’ve never seen before, and all of it is just blowing my mind. Check out their new site but I will warn you, get a bib.

    Introducing The Grid System

    December 1st, 2008

So as many of you already know, I’m freakin’ obsessed with grids. A lot of designers either don’t want to be bothered with grids or just don’t understand them, so I wanted to spread the love a little.

So I created The Grid System.

It’s basically an ever-growing resource site on the topic of grid systems and anything associated to it, like the golden ratio and baseline grids. My goal for the site is to be a one stop shop for all designers to learn about grid systems, how to design them and how to use them.

The site features links to articles, tools, books as well as templates and other goodies. I’ve also added the ability to show the grid that the site was built on, this way visitors can learn about the structure and how it was applied to the design. Let me tell you, it was a pain to get everything to sit on the grid and baselines and to stay consistent across multiple browsers. As of now, the site lines up perfectly with the grid in Safari and Firefox on a Mac. I assume it would be the same on the PC but I haven’t had the time or a computer to test it. I do plan on making it work in all major browsers on both platforms, even the dreadful IE.

I’ve also partnered up with YouWorkForThem to bring a great collection of books to the site. Over time the site will grow in content (I have a backlog of articles and tools to post) as well as features. I plan to add a forum where people can chat about grid systems and design in general, and other small things like wallpapers. Additionally, I’ve created a Flickr group as an extension of the site.

Check it out and let me know what you hate and what you love. I’d love to know what you think.

Another great exhibit that I won’t be able to see. I thought NYC was the art capital of the world? Great shows like this are never here.

Anyway, Vivid Gallery in Rotterdam will be hosting an exhibition on Wim Crouwel from October 11 — November 23. If you’re in the Netherlands you won’t want to miss it.

An exhibition with 100 designs by Wim Crouwel celebrating his 80th birthday
and also celebrating 20 years Nijhof & Lee

To celebrate the 80th birthday of Wim Crouwel and 20 years Nijhof & Lee VIVID organises the exhibition 80 | 20 | 100

100 works by Crouwel will be on display. For this VIVID gallery made a selection out of the superb Crouwel collection of Frank Nijhof and Warren Lee.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue designed by David Quay.

    Pentagram Redesigns the Khaleej Times

    September 4th, 2008

Luke Hayman and Paula Scher of the New York Pentagram office have redesigned the Persian Gulf’s leading English language newspaper, the Khaleej Times. The new design makes use of the space saving typeface, Freight by Joshua Darden, and a wider 6 column grid.

I’d love to one day redesign a newspaper. Text and grid heavy project is paradise.

Super Rare Design Books On Ebay

    August 5th, 2008

I was just doing some ebay searching and found auctions for two VERY VERY rare graphic design books.

Publicity and Graphic Design in the Chemical Industry* (Chemie Werbung Und Grafik) — Published in 1967.

Moderne Werbe Und Gebrauchs Grafik Published in 1980.

Both are part of the ABC Verlag series of design books and are authored by Hans Neuburg.

I own both books and dropped a nice chunk of change for them, but they’re so worth it. You almost never find these two books anywhere so this is a super rare opportunity for some lucky person. I wanted to give you guys the heads up so one of you could grab them first. No bids on them yet so you can probably get them for a good price. And no, I have nothing to do with these auctions. Just wanted to spread the love.

    Setting Up A Baseline Grid

    July 23rd, 2008

Check out this excellent write up on Typophile on how to setup a flexible baseline grid in Adobe InDesign. The author has set up the grid so that every baseline is 12pts apart. This is a good setting that gives you a few leading options to choose from, but someone commented below the article that they’ve setup a 3pt system, which in my opinion works very nicely. Having a baseline every 3 pts gives you great flexibility with leading allowing you to create typography that is more dynamic.

Have a read and also join in on the discussion. I’ve commented under the name YOTS.
