Limited Edition Posters Inspired by Wim Crouwel

It’s seems like it’s Wim Crouwel month, and deservedly so.

Unit Editions and the Design Museum have asked a group of highly regarded graphic designers to design a poster for the “Wim Crouwel, A Graphic Odyssey” exhibit at the Design Museum. The designers were to create a design based on the dimensions and grid of the Stedelijk Museum posters created by Crouwel. My personal favorite is the one designed Experimental Jetset that is pictured here.

The designers:

Michael C Place/Build
Experimental Jetset
MuirMcNeil
Philippe Apeloig
David Pidgeon
Cartlidge Levene
Tony Brook/Spin

Each poster is 635 x 950mm and screen-printed on Pristine white Colorplan. You can grab a copy at the Design Museum and Unit Editions.

Giulio Cittato

Giulio Cittato (1936-1986) was an Italian graphic designer and teacher who worked for Unimark International during the mid 60s and was also a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI). Not much of his work is available for viewing on the web or in books, but the works I’ve seen are truly inspiring and unique. AGI and AIGA have small galleries of Cittato’s work and there’s this wonderful poster design in the book Basic Typography.

There isn’t much info about Cittato other than this short bio on the AGI site:

After he graduated from the Venice University in 1963, Cittato spent two years working as a designer with La Rinascente in Milan. He moved to the USA in 1965, where he worked for Unimark International, the Center for Advanced Research in Design and the Container Corporation of America. In 1971, Cittato returned to Italy and from 1971-74 he taught visual design at the Corso Superiore di Disegno Industriale and the International University of Art in Venice. He was involved in a wide range of design projects, corporate programmes and signage, which he taught at the University of Urbino from 1978-80.

A one-man exhibition was held at the Smithsonian Institute in 1969. Clear colourful compositions were typical of his work. More exhibitions were held in Milan, Montreal and Venice. Samples of his work can be found in the NY MoMA, as well as in museums in Italy and other countries.

Pre-Postmodern Swiss Posters Exhibit

Designer Morgan Smail sent me an email about an exhibit called Pre-Postmodern Swiss Posters that was held at San Jose State University from November 17-December 18, 2009. The posters are from the private collection of designer Aaron Marcus and feature some real gems. Morgan was kind enough to snap some photos of this wonderful exhibit, which I’ve uploaded to my Flickr page.

While doing some research for the exhibit I found this blog post by Aaron Marcus that goes into the history of how he assembled this wonderful poster collection. There’s also a PDF of Aaron’s presentation at the exhibit opening.

The students that attend San Jose State are sure fortunate! This was the same school that held the Spiele: Otl Aicher’s Olympic Graphic Design exhibit two years ago.

Research RCA Exhibition Catalogue

RCA-Research-pamphlet.jpg

Peter of The Luxury of Protest has emailed me about this folded A3 catalogue he and Karin von Ompteda designed for the Royal College of Art. On one side the catalogue highlights seven students representing the seven different schools that comprise Research RCA department.

On the other, the entire student body is visually represent through an information visualization that shows the distribution of all Research students across departments. Each student was recorded with regard to school, department, degree type (MPhil or PhD), project type (Project or Thesis), status (Part or Full-Time), nationality and relationships to collaborators and funding agencies (arched connection lines).

Set in Akkurat and Didot and offset printed in single color (PMS Black) with yellow gold foil stamp on Arjo Wiggins Curious Metallics White Gold 120 gsm paper.

Gorgeous. Wouldn’t expect anything less from Peter.
