Human Being
January 4th, 2010Happy New Year folks! Kind of bummed that the holiday season is over. Oh well, now it’s back to work.
I received an email from Origin68, makers of this pretty cool Human Being t-shirt that represents a human in the form of a product label. I love informative, label-type designs like this. Pretty clever.

RE — C Type Family
December 9th, 2009RE — C is a lovely new typeface by the talented Emil Olsson that is based on mix of french elegance and computer aesthetics. I personally love the “R”.
It’s available in 3 weights (Light, Regular, Bold) and only in upper-case characters. You can get the entire family for only $47 or individual weights for $19 each. A bargain if you ask me.

Conundrums is a striking new book, designed by Harry Pearce of Pentagram, that presents a collection of typographic puzzles constrained by three simple rules: one box, two colours, a single typeface. The typeface used is AG Old Face designed by Guenter Gerhard Lange in 1984 for the H. Berthold AG type foundry.
Beautiful. You can grab a copy for only $10 at Amazon.

Dieter Rams

Seems like there’s a ton of stuff going on around Dieter Rams and his legendary work.
There’s the “Less and More — The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams” exhibit at the Design Museum in London.
To coincide with the event, a book with the same name will be released by Gestalten this month which features all of Rams’ products as well as selected sketches and models. They also have a video interview with Rams on their website.
The excellent design agency Bibliotheque has created two stunning posters dedicated to Rams’ legacy. The first, which is pictured here, is titled “Dieter Rams’ Ten Principles” and features his ten principles for good design. They were commissioned by Vitsœ to create the poster, which is currently available on their site.
The second lovely poster they designed is titled “Dieter Rams T1000″ and features an illustration of the Braun T1000 shortwave receiver. It will be screen printed and should be available this week.
And finally we have the retrospective book “BRAUN – Fifty Years of Design and Innovation” that celebrates 50 years of the Braun brand. The book is slated to be released in 2010 but you can pre-order it now through Amazon.
Wheew! That was a lot! Enjoy.

Hello: A Limited Edition Buddy Carr Skateboard

I’m finally back up! Sorry for the downtime folks and thanks for being so patient. Now that the site is working again, I can finally post about a new project I’ve been working on.
For the past few months I’ve been working with Buddy Carr Skateboards on a limited edition skateboard. Buddy contacted me about doing a complete that exhibited a design not really found in the skate industry. He also wanted it to be a prime example of a well functioning skateboard. Form follows function is the idea behind this project.
Buddy commissioned me to not only design the deck and wheel graphics, but also the shape of the board itself. I grew up skating in the 80’s so the classic shapes are what I find more interesting, which led me to the “stinger” type design for the board. Along with the ultra turning geometry trucks and the soft wheels, this is going to be a great cruiser. I haven’t ridden it yet but according to Buddy, it’s an awesome ride.
For the graphics, Buddy and I agreed that something minimal and typographic would be interesting and unique. I’ve always been intrigued with the idea of saying “Hello” in different languages and this was also a nice way of introducing the collaboration to not only the skate world, but to the design world as well. It’s all designed on a very simple grid and set in the lovely Avant Garde.
The wheels and deck we’re just finished and the grip is in production right now. The complete should be available next month, once I get the site and everything else in place. Only 100 are being made and will be priced a little more than your average skateboard.
Keep checking back, I’ll make an announcement once it’s available. In the meantime you can see some more pics here.
