Oppositions Magazine 1973 – 1984
August 25th, 2010Oppositions was an architectural journal by the Institute For Architecture And Urban Studies that was published from 1973 to 1984. The magazine was designed by the great Massimo Vignelli and it sure doesn’t disappoint with its obvious grid layout. This Flickr set includes a bunch of the covers, some of which feature black illustrations, and this set by Paul Soulellis has some shots of the inside spreads.
I was outbid on a copy of this a few months back. Would have made a great addition to my collection — maybe I’ll start to obsessively search for them now.

Process Journal
May 25th, 2010Process Journal is a quarterly design publication by Australian studio Hunt, that highlights the very best of Australian and International design.
The first edition features work by Unit Editions, Heydays, Norm, Spin, Kim Holtermand, and more.
The journal is printed on Knight Velluem stock using a 4 Colour Process with blind emboss. It looks stunning in the photos, and must be amazing in person. You can pick one up for $25.

Unit: Design/Research 02 — Space & Structure
May 17th, 2010Issue two of the excellent newspaper series by Unit Editions takes a look at Form, a quarterly art magazine published in Great Britain between 1966 and 1969. The magazine includes an interview with Philip Steadman, co-editor, publisher and designer of the magazine.
I’ve seen only a handful of copies of Form for sale over the last few years, but never picked one up. That has now changed. This is probably going to be my new obsession.
U:D/R 02 is edited by Tony Brook & Adrian Shaughnessy, and designed by the awesome studio Spin. The newspaper is 64pp, 4-colour tabloid (folded to 290 x 190mm) with card wrapper printed 1 PMS. You can grab a copy for £7.50.

January 8th, 2010Even though I’ve never done it, I love magazine design. Something about seeing a well-designed spread get’s my creative juices flowing. It’s unfortunate that the magazine industry is hurting because I’d hate to lose all the great creative.
Some of the best magazine designs I’ve seen are by Swiss graphic designer, Anouk Rehorek. His use of black and white color along with serif type is stunning and the way he integrates imagery really creates a perfect balance.

Voice Over Magazine
August 23rd, 2009A lovely publication by Iaspis and Sternberg Press that examines staging, theatricality, and performative strategies in contemporary art practices.
Art direction and designed by Stefania Malmsten and Ulrika Hellberg, Voice Over’s gorgeous cover is printed in silver foil and the entire magazine is set in Chronicle Text and Chronicle Display by Hoefler & Frere-Jones.
Overall this is stunning work, the interior layouts are to die for.
