Limited Edition Helvetica Poster
August 18th, 2010Sorry for the lack of posts this past week, I was under the weather.
Swiss Dots, the producers of the Helvetica documentary, have create this new limited-edition screenprint for the film. The print is inspired by a 1960’s design that has been seen on D. Stempel AG brochures, type specimens and posters — which has been making an appearance on the TV show, Mad Men.
The poster is hand screenprinted on archival 300gsm paper, A2 size (16 1/2″ x 23 1/2″) in a numbered edition of 100 copies, each signed by director Gary Hustwit. You can order one here for $150.

Pan Am Destination Posters
June 16th, 2010These beautiful and mysterious Pan Am posters were designed in 1971 by Chermayeff & Geismar. What’s remarkable about these posters — other than the minimal design and the use of Helvetica — is the power of the photography. The simple, sometimes monocromatic, images make a clear statement about the location and inspire the viewer. You can see a few other examples here and here.

Shepley Bulfinch Poster by Experimental Jetset

I’ve been meaning to post about this for a month now and finally got around to doing it.
Experimental Jetset recently designed this lovely poster, for architecture firm Shepley Bulfinch, announcing their 2010 fellowship. The design is based on the Roman numerals ‘MMX’ represented with geometric forms that relate back architecture. A brilliant piece.

1970s Ravensburger Travel Series
February 2nd, 2010While searching for who knows what, I found these vintage Ravensburger Travel Series games from the 70s. What immediately struck me were the beautiful package designs and the stunning color palettes. Simple, straight to the point graphics with the name of the game set in Helvetica.
It goes to show how graphic design for consumer products has lost its way. Just compare these wonderful package designs to one of their current games. Terrible.

Here’s some lovely work by Dutch designer Roger Willems. I’m particularly fond of these covers for the architectural publication, OverHolland. The bold colors, obvious grid and solid typography give these covers a classic feel as if they’re right out of the 60s era.

Human Being

I received an email from Origin68, makers of this pretty cool Human Being t-shirt that represents a human in the form of a product label. I love informative, label-type designs like this. Pretty clever.

Limited Edition 2010 Letterpress Calendar

I have a thing for well-designed calendars and letterpress printing, so this year I tried to combine the two into a single project.
Now available to order is this Limited Edition 2010 Letterpress Calendar. The print features a calendar with the year printed in English, Italian, French and German. The 2010, the days of the week, and the edition number line are all printed blind, and of course, the type is set in Helvetica. Each print is numbered and signed.
The size of the calendar is 16.5″ x 23.5″ (A2) and printed on Crane Lettra Fluorescent White 110# (300gsm) paper, which is specially made for letterpress. The quality of the paper is superb and gives the print an extra special feel to it.
The printing was done by the fabulous Coeur Noir of Brooklyn, NY. I used these guys for my son’s baptism invites and they also printed all the Helvetica Film posters, as well as the Objectified poster. They simply rock.
This run is very limited, only 50 prints were made, so order one now for $70. You can check out more detailed photos here.
If you’re looking for an affordable framing option, I recommend picking up a good-looking, but inexpensive, IKEA Ribba Frame (19.75″ x 27.5″) and have a custom matte cut to fit it. This setup will run you less than $50.

David over at SeptemberIndustry spotted this gem on Experimental Jetset’s Myspace page. A gorgeous set of print work EJ did for an Heimo Zobernig exhibition in Bordeaux. The work includes an A2 folded to A5 Invitation, A4 Catalog and a massive poster.
I love how the minimal design really makes the poster stand out in a public environment. Exceptionally strong and stunning visual.

Arthur Erickson & Japan Poster

Love this poster for an event called Arthur Erickson & Japan that focuses on modernist architect Arthur Erickson’s journey to Japan in 1961. Not sure who designed it but the big bold type, white text on black, two-column grid and the uneven horizontal strips of color make for a beautiful design.

2010 Calendar Wallpaper

I’ve been working on a 2010 calendar poster that I plan to have letterpressed and figured that it would also work well as a wallpaper. So I put some wallpapers together based on the poster design that features a 2010 calendar and the year written out in English, Italian, French and German. Available in pink and white at 1920x1200.

The Lost Poster

We’re all familiar with the silver Objectified poster, but Michael C. Place designed a second version with a white background and silver objects and black text that wasn’t used. It’s now being released as a limited edition letterpress, printed in metallic black and silver ink, on Crane’s Lettra 300gsm paper. Sounds like heaven.
It’s being printed by the awesome Brooklyn based Coeur Noir Letterpress, the same folks that printed the Helvetica poster and my son’s baptism invitation. They do stellar work.
Only 100 will be printed and you can grab one for $125.

Helvetica Forever Exhibit
May 18th, 2009Helvetica Forever Exhibit is a project by the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf and curated by Lars Müller, Victor Malsy and Philipp Teufel.
The exhibition contains items like advertisements, posters, promotional leaflets as well as documents highlightening Helvetica’s history of origin. The exhibit has already passed through Osaka and Tokyo Japan and will also makes stops in Sofia, Bulgaria and Düsseldorf, Germany.
This is definitely a can’t miss. I’m so bummed that this isn’t at all coming to the US. I’d kill to see this! If anyone has visited the show and has photos, please send them over! Thanks.
