Manuals 1: Design & Identity Guidelines

Unit Editions Manuals 1 Unit Editions Manuals 1 Unit Editions Manuals 1 Unit Editions Manuals 1 Unit Editions Manuals 1 Unit Editions just announced a new book titled Manuals 1 Design & Identity Guidelines. It's a study of corporate identity design manuals from the 1960s to early 1980s. The book includes manuals created for NASA, Lufthansa, British Steel, NYC Transit Authority, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, ABC, and more. The ABC manual is from my collection that I've contributed. I've been really looking forward to this book. Manuals are such a great learning resources because they're not only great to look at, but they also give you insight into the rationale and thinking behind each system. You get to experience what the designers were thinking. The foreword was written by Massimo Vignelli and the book includes text from Adrian Shaughnessy, NASA designer Richard Danne, Greg D’Onofrio and Patricia Belen of Display, Armin Vit, Sean Perkins and John Lloyd. Available in March and you can pre-order now.

Graphic Design for Non-profit Organizations

Graphic Design for Non-profit Organizations AisleOne reader, Sean Wolcott, wrote in to tell me that Massimo Vignelli has given him permission to distribute a high-res PDF of his book, Graphic Design for Non-profit Organizations. This rare book is by Vignelli and Peter Laundry, and was published in 1980 in partnership with AIGA. The book focuses on design and best practices for non-profit organizations, but the content is a great resource in general and the teachings can be applied pretty much anywhere. There are sections on grids, typography, formats, logotypes, and color, just to name a few. A big thank you to Massimo and Sean for making this valuable resource available to all. You can download the PDF from here.

BBC Design Guidelines

bbc.jpg Here's an excellent find. A PDF file on BBC.co.uk named Visual Language 1.0 covering the widening of the site pages. Included are a lot of grid examples which makes it a great read.
