Voice Over Magazine
August 23rd, 2009A lovely publication by Iaspis and Sternberg Press that examines staging, theatricality, and performative strategies in contemporary art practices.
Art direction and designed by Stefania Malmsten and Ulrika Hellberg, Voice Over’s gorgeous cover is printed in silver foil and the entire magazine is set in Chronicle Text and Chronicle Display by Hoefler & Frere-Jones.
Overall this is stunning work, the interior layouts are to die for.

Alte Haas Grotesk
December 18th, 2008I found this excellent font last night while surfing for old Swiss design books. Alte Haas Grotesk by Yann Le Coroller, is a free Grotesk/Helvetica look-a-like with a soft feel to the edges. The author describes it as a typeface that looks like it were printed in an old Brockmann book. It definitely has that feel to it. I’m looking forward to using this in a design.

FontShop Releases FontShuffle
December 5th, 2008Today FontShop Berlin announced the release of FontShuffle, a type specimen catalog for your iPhone or iPod Touch. When I read this I jumped out of my chair. I’ve been waiting for an app like this since like forever dude! But after downloading it and playing around with it this morning, I’m a little disappointed. First I’ll start off with some of the good things about this app and then I’ll get into the stuff that makes this app fall flat on its face.

Tondo
August 6th, 2008FontShop just released a new font called Tondo by Dalton Maag. It comes it 3 weights (Light, Regular, Bold) as well a condensed version. I have soft spot for round faces (I need to use them more) and Tondo is reminiscent of the exceptional face VAG.

From Helvetica To Haas Unica
May 7th, 2008Here’s a wonderful Flickr set of a promotional publication called From Helvetica To Haas Unica by Team’77 that takes you through the development process of Haas Unica. The publication analyzes the Helvetica forms and illustrates the difference between it and Haas Unica. What’s interesting is that Unica was created as an improvement over the the grotesk faces of the time, especially Helvetica. As much as I like Unica, I’m not sure how much of an improvement it is over Helvetica. Much of what makes Helvetica so unique and beautiful is removed from Haas Unica. Nonetheless it’s an excellent read.
I must have a copy! In the meantime you can download a PDF of the publication.
There is an ugly legal battle between Linotype and Scangraphic over the ownership of typeface. Until it’s cleared up, Haas Unica is not commercially available. Fortunately for me, after years of working in the “biz”, I’ve obtained a copy of the font. But since I’ve never purchased it, I don’t ever use it for any work which is unfortunate. I just load it up in my favorite font manager, set some type in Haas Unica and admire it’s beauty. What a shame.
Richard wrote in to let me know of another Flickr set showing the use of Haas Unica in Berlin’s Olympic stadium.

Brauer Neue
April 17th, 2008Brauer Neue is a beautiful typefaced designed by the talented Swiss studio Elektrosmog. Brauer was originally designed by Pierre Miedinger (a nephew of Helvetica designer, Max Miedinger) for a Zurich based brewery called Brauerei Hürlimann. Below are two posters designed by Josef Müller-Brockmann in 1978 that feature the original typeface designed by Miedinger. Elektrosmog took this lost typeface and extended it into a full character set which includes Regular, Bold and Black weights.
You can purchase Brauer Neue from Lineto.
