Daily Book Graphics
October 6th, 2009Daily Book Graphics is a year-long project by Julian Montague where each day he posts, on his blog and his Flickr page, a graphic element from a book that he’s purchased. He started on February 21, 2009 and plans to post something new each day until February 21, 2010. The collection is incredible and it includes a ton of classic book graphics that are designed in the International Typographic Style. An excellent resource for any designer.

Unit Editions
September 30th, 2009This is a little late but better late then never right?
The brilliant Tony Brook (Spin) and Adrian Shaughnessy (ShaughnessyWorks) have started Unit Editions, a new publishing venture that produces high-quality, affordable books on graphic design and visual culture. I’ve been waiting for something like this for a long time and it’s refreshing to see that it’s being manned by two highly respects and talented people. Their attention to print quality and design is superb and it’s very much apparent in their first release, Studio Culture.
Studio Culture, designed by Spin, focuses on the inner workings of 28 leading graphic design studios and acts as a guide to creating, maintaining and growing a studio culture. It’s not only a informative guide, Studio Culture is also a work of art in my opinion. That’s what makes Unit Editions so unique.
I’m super excited for their next release. Actually, a subscription service would be awesome. Just auto-bill me and send me the book. No matter what it’s about, I know it will be gorgeous and informative.

Michael Kosmicki
August 25th, 2009Michael Kosmicki is a graphic design student at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, and his work simply blows me away. I’m amazed at how refined it is, but what I love the most is Michael’s classic sense of style. A lot of his pieces feel like they’re right out of the golden age of Swiss design. Perfect in every way. If we did any print work here, I’d hire this kid in a second.

Counter-print.co.uk is a new site aimed at the sale of out of print and hard to find Art & Design related material. I’ve been wanting something like this for a long time. The site already has a bunch of gems on there, like this Stedelijk Museum catalog designed by Wim Crouwel. This site’s not going to be kind on my wallet.

Penguin on Design Series
December 15th, 2008The Penguin on Design series has been extended with four absolutely gorgeous reissued books on artists Bruno Munari, Marshall McLuhan, Susan Sontag and John Berger.
Yes Design was approached to redesign the covers for the four titles and they did an outstanding job.
I love the simple and minimal design and pure white wasn’t used in the colour palette to create an history feel. Just perfect.
Must. Get. Full. Set!

AisleOne Essentials
December 10th, 2008I’m big on books, not only for their aesthetic value but also for their educational value. Duuuuhhhhh!!!!!
Anyway, it think it’s important for any designer to have a good collection of design oriented books from which they can seek inspiration, ideas and knowledge.
So I’ve put together an Amazon store called AisleOne Essentials to act as a single place for all designers to find the most essential books on graphic design, typography and grid systems. These are all “must reads” in my opinion.
The collection will grow over time so keep checking back for the latest books and I also welcome you all to send me suggestions. If you know of a book that should be included please let me know. Thanks.
