    Cosas Mínimas

Cosas Mínimas (Minimal Things) is the personal portfolio of Madrid based illustrator and designer, Blanca Gómez. I’m in love with her illustrations. Every aspect of her style exhibits a sense of minimalism, from the simple geometric shapes, to the solid colors.

Also check out an interview with Bianca over at Grain Edit.

    The Sameness Booklet

The art and cultural movement, De Stijl, promoted abstraction by simplify design to its most basic elements and utilizing vertical and horizontal orientations and primary colors.

The Sameness Booklet by Alex Fuller and Gabe Usadel pays homage to this Dutch movement with some beautiful, but simple spreads using only red, black and white. This stunning piece is offset printed and is typeset in Akzidenz Grotesk. Alex and Gabe are also responsible for a equally wonderful booklet titled: The Incredible Journey that is Consciousness.

You can order a copy of the book for $12.

    Matthew Lyons

I want to switch it up a little today with the excellent illustration work by Matthew Lyons. I almost never feature illustration work, that’s because it’s rare for me to find good examples that fall within the “minimalism” and “modernism” categories. Matthew’s work does, on so many levels. His style is very minimal, he uses a lot of simple geometric shapes to form the elements and his subjects have a retro-modern-minimal 60’s feel to them that I absolutely love. The colors and shading are also very simplistic, not too much detail, just enough to get the idea across, but at the same time the illustrations have so much depth.

Brilliant work by an artist who’s still in school. Amazing.

    15 Uses for Newsprint

A bunch of illustrators and designers occupying The Pencil Factory in Brooklyn have put together 15 Uses for Newsprint, a promotional newsprint poster zine featuring their own work.

My good friend Alex Eben Meyer is one of the included illustrators and his piece (pictured here) is by far my favorite of them all. Not to say the others stink, there’s a bunch of great pieces included.

The zine includes pieces by Kim Bost, Josh Cochran, Jennifer Daniel, Gilbert Ford, Jessica Hische, Grady McFerrin, Ted McGrath, Alex Eben Meyer, Chris Silas Neal, Zacharia O’Hora, Leif Parsons, Rachel Salomon, Joel Speasmaker, Jillian Tamaki, or Sam Weber.

You can order 15 Uses for Newsprint for $10 and the first 100 orders get an original drawing by one of the artists.

You can peak at some more photos over at The Pencil Factory Flickr page.

Counter-print.co.uk is a new site aimed at the sale of out of print and hard to find Art & Design related material. I’ve been wanting something like this for a long time. The site already has a bunch of gems on there, like this Stedelijk Museum catalog designed by Wim Crouwel. This site’s not going to be kind on my wallet.

    I’m digging this.

File Magazine is a bi-annual publication that focuses on graphic design, art and visual communication and includes a DVD that features shorts, videos, interviews and more. Each issue also features a limited edition print.

They’ve just released their first issue which can be purchased for £6.50.

This has nothing to do with graphic design but I had to write about this. What this elephant does is simply amazing. I have no idea how this is possible. Could it be fake???

Previous dubbed The Designer’s Monarchy, this fine portal has a new name… Reform & Revolution. I’ve been invited to be an author over there and I’ll mostly post about stuff that doesn’t fit here. So check it out, it’s a great source of inspiration.

    Post Expose

    January 28th, 2008

Post Expose is a screen printing and design collective in Long Island City, NY that offers screen printing services, classes, lectures, rentals and also hosts some great exhibits. What’s really interesting about Post Expose is that it allows artists and designers to share tools, space and knowledge.

It’s was started by graphic artist Sarah Mead who I had the pleasure to met this weekend. She’s awesome and knows a ton about screen printing and typography. I passed by on Saturday to go over some project details with Sarah and I ended up staying for 3 hours. We just chatted about design, printing and typography the entire time and I quickly found out that Sarah is just as obsessed with the grid system as I am. If you are in the area definitely stop by to check the place out and say hello. It’s worth it.

I don’t feature much illustration work on here but when I do, it’s because it’s just so fucking good. My good buddy Alex is one of those kick-ass illustrators that you can’t ignore. His unique style, colors and textures make his work stand out from the rest, like a Phillies fan at Shea Stadium. Alex and I meet years ago at a dreadful agency and in those days he was building terrible Flash sites with me. Now he focuses all of his time on illustrating and we should all be grateful. A Philadelphian living in NYC, he’s done work for The New York Times and PC Magazine as well as some skateboard illo’s for 5Boro NYC. This dude is so hardcore that up until recently he’s kept Classic OS 9 on his Mac just so he could run Adobe Streamline. That’s being dedicated to your art. I’ve been asking this punk to sell me one of his illo’s as a large print for years, but he’s just slacking off. Maybe it’s cause I hate the Phillies.
