An extraordinary poster by the ridiculously talented Cameron Moll, that took a year to make. An image of the Coliseum in Rome, Italy is formed using handcrafted characters from the Goudy Trajan and Bembo Pro typefaces.

Each poster is printed on Somerset Velvet Black or Crane Lettra Pearl and letterpressed by Bjørn Press of Provo, Utah.

I’m simply amazed but the level of detail and the quality of the piece, but what I’m truly impressed by is the dedication and commitment by Cameron to stick with it for an entire year. It was totally worth it.

Shepley Bulfinch Poster by Experimental Jetset

    March 5th, 2010

I’ve been meaning to post about this for a month now and finally got around to doing it.

Experimental Jetset recently designed this lovely poster, for architecture firm Shepley Bulfinch, announcing their 2010 fellowship. The design is based on the Roman numerals ‘MMX’ represented with geometric forms that relate back architecture. A brilliant piece.

You can read more about the design process on Shepley Bulfinch’s blog and get a peak at an early sketch EJ did for the poster. It’s always interesting to see how a design evolves from a sketch to the final piece.

    Arthur Erickson & Japan Poster

    November 22nd, 2009

Love this poster for an event called Arthur Erickson & Japan that focuses on modernist architect Arthur Erickson’s journey to Japan in 1961. Not sure who designed it but the big bold type, white text on black, two-column grid and the uneven horizontal strips of color make for a beautiful design.

Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman

Visual Acoustics is a documentary film by Eric Bricker that explores the career of the extraordinary architectural photographer, Julius Shulman. His aesthetics, composition and style create timeless photographs that epitomize modern architecture. Shulman is easily one of my favorite photographers.

Unfortunately there isn’t a good online gallery of his complete work, you have to do some searching to find most of it. But there is an amazing book set titled Julius Shulman, Modernism Rediscovered that catalogues his personal archives. Gotta get my hands on a copy.

The film is being screened in limited cities, one of which isn’t NYC, which I don’t understand. Shulman himself will be speaking at some of the screenings and if you’re lucky enough to be in one of these cities, definitely check it out. It’s should be a good one.

Another gorgeous book by Bierut’s team at Pentagram. Writings on Architecture is being published in conjunction with the rededication of Rudolph’s newly restored masterpiece, Yale’s Art and Architecture Building.

Also check out this gallery of excellent posters designed by Michael Bierut for the Yale School of Architecture.

I’m loving Kim Høltermand’s photography. The colors, composition and subject matter give the images a very graphic feel. Makes me want to get back into photography.

Kim is also responsible for these excellent VW tribute posters but it seems like they’ve been removed from the site.
