Mark Caneso, a designer from Southern California, is offering his lovely Quarto typeface free of charge. Head over to his site to grab a copy. I personally love the Q and R. Very nice.

Experimenta, one of my favorite studios, has changed their name to The International Office and has put up a bunch of new work that will just keep you drooling for hours. Damn these guys are good. I love how simple and typographic their work is.

Robert Lee of Unicorn Graphics in Garden City, NY has amassed an incredible collection of wood types and engraved blocks, and is cataloging them in an online museum for everyone to view. The collection includes catalogs, wood types, ornaments, borders, engraved blocks, cuts and more. Simply amazing. The museum is described as:

This Web Museum is established for the purpose of educating the general public, and the next generation, on the beauties of wood types and engraved blocks. Our mission is to gather, save, preserve, and interpret wood types and information about them.

    Well done Robert.

For all you Kindle users out there, the AisleOne Kindle version has been approved by Amazon and is now available for a monthly price of $.99, which includes a 14-day free trial. They don’t give you any control over the design and layout of the feed so I’m sure it’s going to look ugly. Hey, at least you’ll get to access the content right? Anyway, enjoy.

    Helvetica Forever Exhibit

Helvetica Forever Exhibit is a project by the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf and curated by Lars Müller, Victor Malsy and Philipp Teufel.

The exhibition contains items like advertisements, posters, promotional leaflets as well as documents highlightening Helvetica’s history of origin. The exhibit has already passed through Osaka and Tokyo Japan and will also makes stops in Sofia, Bulgaria and Düsseldorf, Germany.

This is definitely a can’t miss. I’m so bummed that this isn’t at all coming to the US. I’d kill to see this! If anyone has visited the show and has photos, please send them over! Thanks.

Atelier 1A is the new moniker of designer Glenn Garriock, also a contributor of the excellent site FormFiftyFive. Glenn’s portfolio is a must see, my favorite being this poster for the Digital Photography course at Telford College.

    Neutraface Slab

I’ve always been a fan on the wonderful Neutrface typeface. It’s simple, clean and classical and the geometry gives it a balanced feel that is pleasing. It’s damn sexy, especially in the light weights.

So when I saw that House Industries released a Slab version, I was all giddy. I’ve recently been obsessed with Slab and Serif faces so this was instance love.

Neutraface Slab comes in five display weights and four text weights, including italics, as well as small caps and seven figure styles. The complete set will cost you $599.00, which isn’t so bad considering the amount of the weights you get. I might have to add this to my collection.

    New Rail Alphabet

New Rail Alphabet is a revival of the typeface used for the British Rail that was designed by Margaret Calvert in the late 60’s. The original consisted of two versions but this new version is available in 6 weights: Off White, Light, Medium, Bold and Black.

I love it. A nice alternative to Helvetica.

Hello: A Limited Edition Buddy Carr Skateboard

    May 11th, 2009

I’m finally back up! Sorry for the downtime folks and thanks for being so patient. Now that the site is working again, I can finally post about a new project I’ve been working on.

For the past few months I’ve been working with Buddy Carr Skateboards on a limited edition skateboard. Buddy contacted me about doing a complete that exhibited a design not really found in the skate industry. He also wanted it to be a prime example of a well functioning skateboard. Form follows function is the idea behind this project.

Buddy commissioned me to not only design the deck and wheel graphics, but also the shape of the board itself. I grew up skating in the 80’s so the classic shapes are what I find more interesting, which led me to the “stinger” type design for the board. Along with the ultra turning geometry trucks and the soft wheels, this is going to be a great cruiser. I haven’t ridden it yet but according to Buddy, it’s an awesome ride.

For the graphics, Buddy and I agreed that something minimal and typographic would be interesting and unique. I’ve always been intrigued with the idea of saying “Hello” in different languages and this was also a nice way of introducing the collaboration to not only the skate world, but to the design world as well. It’s all designed on a very simple grid and set in the lovely Avant Garde.

The wheels and deck we’re just finished and the grip is in production right now. The complete should be available next month, once I get the site and everything else in place. Only 100 are being made and will be priced a little more than your average skateboard.

Keep checking back, I’ll make an announcement once it’s available. In the meantime you can see some more pics here.

    System Meltdown

Well, that sucked. Media Temple’s servers fell off the grid last night, rendering this site dead. We’re back online now, well sort off. Some pages and images are missing. Apparently the site was on an old server that’s on it’s way out and they’re now migrating the AisleOne to a new, faster and more reliable server. I hope this fixes any future problems. I really apologize for the inconvenience and hopefully the site will be in full swing tomorrow morning. Thank you for your patience.

    UPDATE

So, the site is still not 100% restored but it’s very close. I’m hoping it all back up by the morning. Hang in there folks, it’s almost over. Hopefully when it’s all done the site will be faster and more stable. Really sorry for the downtime. We’ll get back to design goodness very soon. Promise!

    Astrid Stavro Studio

    May 4th, 2009

I’m absolutely in love with this poster by Barcelona based studio, Astrid Stavro, that was created for the International Piano Competition in 2007. Strong, beautiful typography on a well formed, grid reminiscent of the great work that came out of the 60’s. A wonderful example of the International Typographic Style.

They’ve designed a ton of wonderful pieces so be sure you surf through their portfolio. Unfortunately the site isn’t that great, and it’s a little annoying to do so, but it’s very much worth it.

Astrid Stavro is also responsible for the wonderful Art of the Grid site.
